Press Release: AWA 60th Anniversary Gala

October 24, 2016

The AWA celebrated its accomplishments at its 60th Anniversary Gala October 22, 2016 at the Aberdeen Marina Club with the Honorable Mrs. Anson Chan, GBM, GCMG, CBE, JP who delivered an inspirational, awe-inspiring speech of hope and resilience with her trademark humor:

“At the time, there were 4 candidates for the post, 3 men and myself. I’d like to think that Mr. Patten gave me the job because he thought I was the best man for the job.”

Mrs. Chan, along with her sister Ninson Loh were among distinguished guests who joined Mrs. Marcy LaRont, President of AWA in celebrating our legacy. The newly arrived American Consul General Kurt Tong and his wife Dr. Mika Marumoto, Deputy Consul General Thomas Hodges and his wife Sandra, the American Chamber of Commerce Chairman Dr. Richard Vuylsteke and Mr. Peter Levesque, head of the AmCham Charitable Foundation, as well as many members of the board of trustees were in attendance.

“We share a dedication to giving back to the Hong Kong community, and have proudly watched our partnership grow over the years,” says Dr. Richard R. Vuylsteke, president of AmCham. “We are proud of the close cooperation and support between our two organizations and we wish the AWA hearty congratulations on its 60th anniversary.”

AWA President Marcy LaRont spoke passionately about the organization’s impact:

“As I stand here today, the AWA has been responsible for funding over HK$30 million in charitable grants and education scholarships, effecting countless women, girls, children, the elderly and disabled. Whether we are teaching English to students in public schools; or providing the resources for ceiling fans for an elder care home; or reading for the blind; or supplying iPads for isolated children being treated for serious heart conditions; or buying cochlear implant hearing aid batteries so that deaf 2 year olds do not miss their one developmental opportunity to develop speech - the AWA continues to give back in a multitude of ways. We are vested in Hong Kong and hope to give something of ourselves because Hong Kong has given us so much.”
