Causeway Bay epitomizes high-end shops, crowds and constant consumerism. A closer looks reveals numerous lesser-known historical details and unexpected surprises. Our Walk begins with Victoria Park, where the key developmental role of local conglomerate Jardine, Matheson and Co. in Causeway Bay’s transformation and growth will be discussed. We will then visit the statue of Queen Victoria, and learn about its journey from Central to Causeway Bay – via Japan. From Victoria Park, we pass by Queen’s College, Hong Kong premier government boy’s schools, Tin Hau Temple, and Lin Fa Kung, where the annual Tai Hang Fire Dragon Festival takes place. Then via Fook Tak Chi, to St. Paul’s Hospital’s famous Chapel, St. John Ambulance Headquarters Building, the ornate, Chinese-style St. Mary’s Anglican Church, and Po Leung Kuk, a protected building. Along the way, we will see unexpected reminders of WWII. We finish at the marvellous Racecourse Fire Memorial, on the hillside behind the HK Stadium.
