Shatin Bicycle Tour with Michael Hansen

Cooler fall temperatures are finally upon us and it’s time to get back to nature and on your bikes again! Though farmers worked the land in the area for centuries, the current Sha Tin is quite a modern invention created in the 1970’ies through the straightening of the tamed Shing Mun River and the filling in of the shallow Tidal Cove. Presented with a virtually blank canvas, town planners had the luxury to put in place a complete traffic infrastructure which includes an extensive network of bicycle paths.

Setting out from Tai Wai Railway Station, we will start by riding north through Sha Tin and Fo Tan to the Chinese University at Ma Liu Shui, where we tag east to follow the shores of Tolo Harbour past Ma On Shan to the ramshackle hamlet of Wu Kai Sha and a refreshment stop on the beach. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to check out the Wai Bun Castle in Tai Wai, a small buddhist temple at Sha Tin Tau, Wong’s Old House at Yuen Chau Kok and Tsang’s Big House in Shan Ha Wai.

On the way back, we will head to the Sha Tin Floating Restaurant for a delicious Dim Sum lunch at shared expense before returning the bicycles in Tai Wai.

Please note you will not be able to rent bicycle helmets so you should bring your own if needed. Please wear appropriate biking gear and a backpack as this is easier to carry on a mountain bike. Bicycle rental is included in the price but refreshments will be at your own expense.
