All members, whether you have read this month's book or not, are invited to try out this month's Book Club, where you can get a taste for the types of discussions we have at our monthly gatherings. We meet at Cafe 8, a lovely social enterprise that employs specially-abled adults, so arrive a few minutes early if you would like to grab a drink or snack to nibble on because we start our conversation right at 2:00.
At this month's Book Club, we'll be discussing the inspiring-but-controversial book American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins.
American Dirt is a "social thriller" about a couple and their young son as they make a heart-pounding escape from Mexico to the United States after a drug cartel destroys their family.
American Dirt celebrates survival against tremendous odds. It praises the bravery, resilience, determination, and the plight of the migrants who travel to the US to seek safety. This book has also been a subject of controversy in some circles, with people wondering about the appropriation of the author's right to share a perspective that she hasn't personally experienced. These topics and more will help us go deeper in our conversation together as we share our thoughts on things such as:
- What are you ready to do to save your family (easy to say but hard to do)?
- Is truth always a good thing? (in this story if the husband had kept quiet about the drugs industry... they would be fine)
- Is it ok to write about a topic that is fictional for you = immigration/ rape/ adoption?
We hope to see you there! Please register so that we know how many seats to save at the cafe.
