Dialogue in the Dark
English Conversation volunteers conduct lively conversation classes over the course of 6 weeks with Dialogue in the Dark adult students retraining to enter the workforce. These adult students display varying degrees of visual impairment, either from birth, developed during childhood, or perhaps due to an accident as an adult. A weekly topic is decided upon in advance, and both volunteers and students come prepared to share with one another.
Meet weekly for 2 hours for 6 weeks. Day and time varies to suit student and volunteer schedules. Each cohort consists of approximately 10 students. Ideally a group of 6 volunteers, to ensure at least 2 can attend each week.
The Difference We Make
Over the 6 weeks volunteers and students get to know one another through conversation. As the DiD students become more comfortable with the volunteers, they really open up and become quite lively. This confidence building exercise is invaluable to them as they retrain themselves in a multitude of skills to re-enter the workforce and become more independent.
