The pursuit of fashion sustainability is a vast and urgent task – one that many agree requires radical and transformative measures. Is fashion on track to truly becoming more sustainable? Or is the industry missing the mark on achieving real change?

For September, Women In Action series presents a panel discussion on The Problem With Sustainable Fashion, raising awareness on what really counts as sustainable (beyond going carbon neutral!) and how to make better sustainable clothing choices as a consumer.

Featured speakers include Nissa Cornish from Redress, Christine Chow from Tove & Libra, and Lenia Pérez from VIPOP. The panel is moderated by AWA member Garkay Wong.

Guests can bring any and all items of unwanted clothing to the event for Redress' Takeback Program and resource redistribution.

Non-AWA Members: Please email [email protected] for registration.

About the speakers:

Nissa Cornish: Nissa is the Executive Director at Redress, an environmental NGO working with consumers and industry to empower the shift to a circular fashion system. With over 15 years in environmental nonprofit leadership roles, Nissa believes that everyone – consumers, brands, policymakers – needs to participate in ensuring a sustainable future.

Christine Chow: Chow’s and business partner Ivan Tang’s families have been in the fashion business for three generations, manufacturing fabrics and apparel for fashion brands big and small. Watching this lifecycle get shorter and dirtier over the past decade, they realized the urgent need for a more harmonious approach to what they make and wear. Seeing a dire lack of authentically sustainable options in fashion, they finally decided to leverage their heritage and expertise into their own womenswear brand, Tove & Libra. Stylish, well-made, comfortable and sustainable – their mission is to make fashion that’s better for both your closet and the planet.

Lenia Pérez When it comes to fashion, in particular Latin American fashion, Lenia Perez is an expert in the field. Growing up with two artistic parents, Lenia was inspired to take her love for fashion to a professional level, studying Design of Fashion at CIDID in Venezuela. “I’ve always had the creative itch and having such encouraging parents allowed me to explore that far beyond what I could have imagined.”  Wanting to provide a platform and a space for other Latin American brands and designers, Lenia founded VIPOP, a Hong Kong-based fashion brand dedicated to shining a light on sustainable handcrafted pieces from Latin America. Located in the heart of Central, the label hopes to transform Hong Kong’s fashion industry through eco-friendly, ethically-sourced garments and accessories.

About the venue:

VIPOP is a Hong Kong-based fashion brand dedicated to shining a light on Latin American sustainable, handcrafted works for consumer fashion. VIPOP’s pieces set out to make us feel unique and inspired daily, knowing we carry a piece of heritage and sustainable living wherever we roam. VIPOP is a dream deeply rooted in culture and a drive to connect.
