[WAITLISTED] American Mah Jongg for Experienced Players: Introductory Workshop
This activity is now full. Please click here to be placed on waitlist.
Join us for a lively and engaging introductory workshop that introduces the distinctive style of American mah jongg. This version of the game has several exciting features that set it apart, including the Charleston tile exchange, the strategic use of jokers, and the annual NMJL score card with designated hands. It is a fun and refreshing way to expand your mahjong skills.
Who May Join
Participants must have at least three months of regular mahjong playing experience (at the discretion of the AWA) and must be able to recognize all character and wind tiles without aids. This ensures that everyone can focus on learning the American format rather than reviewing tile basics.
Instructor
Maria Barnet will be our instructor for this workshop. She is an AWA member who relocated from Beijing to Hong Kong last year and joins our Monday sessions whenever she is in town. Maria learned to play American mah jongg while in Beijing and is glad to have the opportunity to introduce another style of mahjong to our community.
Score Card Requirement
All players must have the current National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) score card for the workshop. The AWA will purchase the cards on your behalf, and the cost is included in the course fee. Your score card will be provided to you at the start of the session.
Registration Priority
Priority will be given to AWA members. Non‑AWA members may register for the waitlist and will be contacted if space becomes available.
Why Try American Mah Jongg
American mah jongg offers a fresh pace and new strategic elements that many players enjoy. The Charleston, the use of jokers, and the structured hands on the NMJL card create a dynamic and enjoyable style of play. It is especially appealing for members who have lived in the United States or may return there in the future.
Come explore this popular version of mahjong and enjoy learning something new with fellow AWA members.
