Fabric Scrap Collage Painting Workshop – Layer, Glue & Create!
Join us for our Fabric Scrap Collage Painting Workshop and discover how color, pattern, and texture can come together to create a bold, dimensional masterpiece—no sewing required!
Inspired by contemporary textile art and abstract block compositions (like layered geometric panels and textured patchwork designs), this hands-on class invites you to reimagine fabric scraps as painterly building blocks. Using glue and layering techniques, you’ll turn simple materials into a striking, wall-ready artwork.
In this workshop, you’ll design and create a one-of-a-kind fabric collage painting by arranging and adhering fabric pieces onto a panel. We’ll explore how overlapping shapes, varied sizes, and thoughtful placement can create depth, movement, and strong visual impact.
You’ll experiment with structured layouts (such as grid or block arrangements) as well as more organic, freeform designs. Learn how to balance bold colors with neutrals, mix patterns effectively, and create contrast through texture. Optional paint washes or dry brushing techniques can be added to unify your composition and enhance surface interest—just like turning fabric into paint.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own fabric scraps—old clothing, meaningful textiles, quilting remnants, or patterned materials. Personal fabrics add a storytelling element and make your piece even more special. A shared fabric collection will also be available for everyone to use.
As your collage comes together, we’ll guide you through proper gluing techniques, layering strategies, and finishing methods so your artwork is secure, polished, and ready to hang.
What You’ll Learn:
- How to design and build a fabric collage on a wooden board
- Composition techniques using shape, repetition, and negative space
- Ways to create contrast through color, scale, and texture
- Proper gluing and layering methods for secure adhesion
- Finishing techniques including sealing and display options
Leave with a richly textured, contemporary artwork and a fresh perspective on the creative potential of fabric scraps. No sewing experience needed—just bring your creativity (and a few favorite textiles)!
