History of HK with Jason Wordie Series 5 - Hidden Diversity: Hong Kong's Ethnic Minority Communities

Hong Kong is often described – erroneously – as a cosmopolitan, ‘international’ society, and at first glance the city certainly exhibits those characteristics, but like many aspects of local life, the reality is somewhat different. In many key respects, Hong Kong was a far more diverse society a century ago than it is today. In this talk, we will explore the social and professional roles and diverse contributions made by various ethnic minority groups from the 1840s to the present day. In particular, attention will be given to Sikhs and Punjabi Moslems, Nepalese, Sindhis and other groups from the Indian sub-continent, Sephardic Jews, Parsees, Portuguese, Eurasians and White Russians and especially to any notable women. This will be an evening event. We'll kick off with some tasty nibbles served starting from 6:30 pm, with the talk commencing at 7 pm. Time for Q and A at the end.
