Get Your Affairs In Order: Estate Planning & Wills with Asa Wilkins
Non-Members: Please go here for registration.
In recognition of World Health Day, Sunday, April 7, AWA is proud to offer a variety of unique experiences throughout April in connection to each of the eight dimensions of the Wellness Wheel.
Get Your Affairs In Order targets financial wellness with a discussion on the most common misconceptions surrounding guardianship, estate planning, and Wills so you can rest assured that your family is fully protected no matter what may happen.
In this 90-minute session, Åsa Wilkins from Phoenix Wills will cover a range of topics and debunk common myths such as:
My husband and I have a joint bank account, so I will be fine if he passes away or is in a coma.
Fact: Unfortunately not – it is likely that you would have no access to a HK joint account if you are not the primary account holder.
I don’t need to appoint a guardian, because my parents would fly in immediately and collect my minor children or my helper would step in.
Fact: This is not possible, and you risk your children going into state care.
I don’t need a Will because all assets are in my husband’s name and will automatically transfer to me.
Fact: Actually, you should have your own Will.
I am an expat with assets in multiple countries, and I can/ should only have one Will.
Fact: It is often better to have multiple Wills covering each country separately.
I have had a fallout with my brother, so I will just leave him out of my Will.
Fact: In that situation, he may still have a claim to your estate.
My Will should be kept in a bank safety deposit box.
Fact: That is the last place you should keep a Will.
All individuals are welcome to attend. Bring your husband, partner or guest to take this opportunity and ask questions on information you deserve to know.
